HIM, in theaters September 19

Quick Take: First down conscription– sho’ ain’t your mama’s draft day.

🎬BREAKDOWN

Story Hook: Love for the game transforms to soul in the flame. What happens when a fan is turned into a figment of his hero’s sadistic imagination? His promising pro career is revealed as a Lethean River Styx– where memory fades, violence bonds and damnation is the playbook.

Visual Impact: Think Jordan Peele meets Dionysus—psychedelic quick cuts, glossy dread, and a somber palette that pulls you into madness.

Performance Promises: Marlon Wayans promises to give what he gives best– that handsome charisma and comedic gravitas while pushing himself further as a dramatic lead. And Tyriq Withers moves clean through innocence into complicity, promising a meditation on the transactional sacrifice of prostrating at the American sports altar.

Pertinents: From Monkeypaw Productions, this is the trailer for a 1-hour-and-36-minute Horror based on a Black List screenplay by Zack Akers & Skip Bronkie. HIM is directed by Justin Tipping and stars college-footballer turned actor Tyriq Withers and an ever masqueric Marlon Wayans.

Verdict:
The visuals promise heat, but the ritual feels familiar: sports, sacrifice, secret brotherhood. In a field already crowded with fraternal bloodletting and high-capital soul trades, the only new thing here might be the label on the helmet.
