WELCOME TO THE TRAILER TRIALS.
WHERE WE JUDGE PREVIEWS WITH POPCORN-POWERED PRECISION.
We blazing with excitement or eye-rolling with boredom?
Project Hail Mary, launches into the light of the sun this March 20.
Quick Take: Grace, sacrifice and a tether to something bigger than the self. These are very spiritual themes taking off with sci-fi ignition.
BREAKDOWN
Story Hook: The sun is dying. Earth is on the brink of total destruction. All life, including human, faces extinction. One man is the only hope. Grace goes to space to save the great god star. This is a sacrifice not just for the many, but for the planet itself. With the world in his heart and friendship — in the form of an extraterrestrial rock companion — as sustenance, Grace voyages into the beyond to save home.
Visual Impact: At first glance, this reads like a typical family-friendly sci-fi. But what’s most striking is the use of light and dark — the vastness of space set against the confinement of a single spacecraft.
One note: The use of Prince’s music is haunting and beautiful. Since his passing, licensing decisions now benefit both his Estate and corporate partners like Primary Wave, with revenue supporting Paisley Park and archival preservation. Still, given Prince’s historic vigilance over his work, it’s fair for audiences to wonder how closely these placements align with the spirit of his original intentions.
Performance Promises: Ryan Gosling is cool, sweet, boyish, and calm — perfect for a “stranded in space” story where his closest companion isn’t human. It’s not quite the thespian showcase of Cast Away, but it still takes a strong actor to play opposite an animated rock. Rocky feels alive, with its own personality, goals, and emotional pull. Because of Gosling’s grounded performance, we root for Rocky as much as we do for him.
Pertinents:
Directed by: Phil Lord & Christopher Miller
Screenplay by: Drew Goddard

Verdict: The trailer leans less on spectacle and more on soul, and that may be its greatest strength. Project Hail Mary looks like it wants to be a story about connection, sacrifice, and the fragile miracle of survival — not just another space crisis movie. If it delivers on that emotional promise, it could hit the same sweet spot The Martian did: smart, sincere, and surprisingly moving. If not, it risks drifting into the familiar orbit of competent but forgettable sci-fi. For now, though, the trailer makes the journey feel worth taking.
